Our photos of when the London 2012 Olympic torch relay came to Preston (June 2012)

OLYMPIC TORCH COMES STRAIGHT THROUGH UCLAN

We all got up at 6am to make sure that we saw the once in a lifetime experience as the Torch Relay for the London Olympics 2012 came to Preston!!
We were very excited and were definitely not disappointed.

We stood outside the Language centre at The University of Central Lancashire where they offer free English classes to students who are currently studying at UCLan.

It took about half an hour of waiting for us to finally hear some noise from the parade with the Olympic Torch.

Once the parade was in full swing we saw the likes of Lloyds TSB giving out free balloons, Coke giving out free bottles of Coke along with music and athletes from the area waving to us!!

Once the Torch had been passed just in front of us outside the University it continued through the rest of the City.

We ran as fast as our legs could carry us to the City Centre to watch the Torch arriving at it's final destination. We stood outside the Harris Museum which was amazing to see with hundreds of people lining up to see the Torch.

The students were really excited and described this as a once in a lifetime experience and I certainly agree.

Please take a look at our photo stream on Flickr which will show you how the day looked!!

Ensuring our international diploma students have a seamless transition to year 2 of their degree

At UCLan FoundationCampus our international diploma programme is closely linked to the Lancashire Business School's year one degree; in terms of content, assessment methods and fully qualified and experienced teachers.

We work closely with the Business School staff to ensure that our students have a seamless transition to year two of their degree so that our students have the best possible start on their degree programme.

Our students have full access to the University facilities and are taught on campus in University teaching rooms so they are already used to the university environment. Today, they met the second of three course leaders to help with preparing our students for year two of their degree,

The course leader for BA (Hons) Business Administration (Giles McClelland) spoke to our students who wish to progress onto his degree programme. He informed the students, in detail, about the options available on the degree, what steps they need to take when progressing onto the degree course and what they can expect from year two and three of the study. Giles related the session to the specific interests of the students and explained how the course is useful for Masters degree study, such as a Masters in Business Administration (an MBA, which is considered the industry standard management qualification - which can also be studied at UCLan). He also explained how students are made ready for employment and how students could specialise to gain a named degree in Accounting, Marketing or Entrepreneurship, amongst others.

Once the students have their results Giles and the diploma course leader (Graham Garforth) will meet with the students to ensure they are choosing the best modules based on their interests, career and study ambitions and results on a one to one basis before they start their degree course.

Find out more about the course at The University of Central Lancashire here.
Find out more about our International Diploma here.

The content of BA (Hons) Business Administration year two currently covers: the global business environment, operations management and career planning.

Year three covers - strategic management, contemporary business issues and continual professional development.

Optional modules in year 2 and 3 include - accounting and finance, marketing, business information systems, human resource management, business modelling and entrepreneurship.

Assessment is a mixture of coursework, groupwork and some examinations.

Chemistry Practical Lessons by William Dongo

Students conducting Chemistry experiment

Over the last term the Chemistry students have been getting involved in their practical studies. Our Chemistry teacher William Dongo has written us a short summary of what the practical lessons involve and also an example time table to show us how their lessons are broken down. We hope you enjoy!

Background
UFP Chemistry students do a total of four lab practicals in two weeks every year as part of their Module 2 (coursework) Assessment. They do qualitative and quantitative analysis in the following disciplines: Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. Before they start the lab practicals students are given a tour of all the chemical analysis laboratories in the brandy new J.B Firth Building by the senior technician, Sal Celine.
Importance
During these lab practicals students work in small groups and they are encouraged to mix with their colleagues from a different cohort. This allows students to have time to develop group study skills and also to develop social skills as they have to work with someone from a different class.
After each lab practical, each student has to write and submit a lab report and this gives them an opportunity to enrich their independent skills. Students are also encouraged to use IT tools to produce their lab reports.
Lab practicals also give our students a fantastic opportunity to taste real lab experience at university level.
Feedback
Most students did well during this year with a few doing exceptionally well. September students also filled out a feedback questionnaire and most expressed that they found the experience worthy and exciting. They also said that the staffs were helpful (lab technicians and myself).
